Helping people grow food in Latvia's challenging climate. Raised beds, cold-hardy plants, and traditional cottage garden wisdom.
16 Years Growing in the Baltics
I grew up watching my grandmother tend vegetables the old Latvian way—no fuss, no shortcuts, just understanding what works in our climate. That childhood curiosity turned into a career when I studied horticultural sciences at the Latvia University of Agriculture in Jelgava. Since 2008, I've spent every growing season learning what actually thrives when temperatures drop to -20°C and you've only got four months of real growing weather.
My real education came from eight years at the Riga Botanical Garden's climate research division. We weren't just cataloguing plants—we were testing them. Which varieties could handle our soil? What soil amendments actually mattered in Zone 4-5? How do you build beds that don't wash away? Those questions became my obsession. In 2012, I developed a modular raised bed system designed specifically for Baltic microclimates. It's not fancy. It works.
Today, as Senior Gardening Expert at luxitrade SIA, I work with gardeners across Latvia—from people trying to grow tomatoes on Riga apartment balconies to homeowners building their first proper vegetable beds. I've helped establish over 40 demonstration gardens in the Riga and Pieriga regions. What drives me is straightforward: gardening in a challenging climate like ours isn't about fighting nature. It's about understanding it.

Baltic Gardening Expertise
Raised Bed Construction
I've tested dozens of materials, dimensions, and designs. Raised beds work in Latvia—but only if they're built right. I focus on practical construction that handles our freeze-thaw cycles, poor native soil, and unpredictable spring weather. My approach prioritizes durability over aesthetics, though you don't have to sacrifice either.
Cold-Hardy Plant Selection
Not every plant survives Zone 4-5. I've documented which varieties actually thrive in our climate, which ones struggle, and which ones surprise you with their hardiness. This isn't theoretical—it's from years of field trials and watching what succeeds in real Latvian gardens. Tomatoes, berries, root vegetables, perennials—I know what works.
Latvian Cottage Garden Traditions
Our grandmothers understood something modern gardening sometimes forgets—how to work with nature rather than against it. Traditional Latvian gardens weren't random. They followed patterns that survived centuries because they worked. I blend that ancestral knowledge with current practices to help people build gardens that feel authentic and actually produce.
Balcony & Small-Space Gardening
Most people in Riga don't have land. They've got balconies. Containers aren't a compromise—they're a legitimate way to grow food and flowers in the city. I specialize in making small spaces productive. Micro-climates, container selection, watering in our climate, dealing with wind exposure—it's its own skill set.
How I Think About Gardening
Gardening in Latvia isn't hard because we're bad at it. It's challenging because we've got real constraints—short growing seasons, heavy soil, temperature swings, and unpredictable weather. The first step is accepting that. The second step is getting smart about it.
Every article and guide I write comes from hands-on experience, not theory. I've failed plenty. I've learned what works and what doesn't. I've documented which practices actually save time versus which ones sound good in books but flop in practice. My job is sharing that knowledge so you don't repeat my mistakes.
Whether you're building your first raised bed, selecting plants that won't die in February, or trying to grow herbs on a Riga balcony—I approach it the same way. What's realistic? What actually works in our climate? How do we do this with minimal fuss and maximum results?
